The story behind the card
Dostoevsky published this short story in 1848, a year before his arrest and four years of hard labour in Siberia. It unfolds over four nights of the St Petersburg summer, when the sun barely sets. A lonely young man, a self-described dreamer, meets Nastenka crying at a canal railing. On the second night she asks for his story; he says he has none, and she laughs and asks how he has lived without one. He admits to a life spent alone, mostly in daydreams, and falls in love with her.
