The idea in context
One of the internet's most famous misattributions: quote researchers have found no trace of it in Oscar Wilde's plays, essays or letters, and it first appears long after his death. Wilde did write genuinely close things — “Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry” (De Profundis). The modern slogan is a friendlier echo of that darker, authentic thought.
