The story behind the card
Lord Henry Wotton says this to Dorian near the end of The Picture of Dorian Gray. Dorian, weighed down by his crimes, accuses Henry of poisoning him with a French novel, which Wilde admitted at his trial was, or almost was, Huysmans's À rebours. Henry laughs it off: art does not influence action. The magazine version of 1890 had been condemned as immoral. For the 1891 book Wilde added a preface: there is no such thing as a moral or an immoral book, only books well or badly written.
