The story behind the card
These lines close the first of the poem's two stanzas. In the first, the speaker says goodbye to someone with a kiss and grants that those who think his days have been a dream are not wrong. In the second, he stands on a stormy shore as grains of sand slip through his fingers, and the poem ends by asking the same thing again as a question. Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849), the American poet of 'The Raven', published it in March 1849, about six months before his death.
