Oily fish like salmon, mackerel and sardines are rich in the omega-3 fats EPA and DHA, which support the heart and brain and help calm inflammation. Plant sources such as walnuts and flaxseed offer a different form, ALA, that the body converts into the others only slowly — which is why oily fish, or a supplement, is often recommended directly.
