The story behind the card
The phrase comes from the tenth Satire of the Roman poet Juvenal, written in the early 2nd century AD. The poem mocks people who pray for wealth, power, fame, beauty or a long life, since such wishes often bring ruin. If you must pray, Juvenal says, ask for “mens sana in corpore sano”, a sound mind in a sound body, and a brave heart that does not fear death. It later became a motto of sport, and in Turkey its Turkish form is often credited to Atatürk, the republic's founder.

Söz, Romalı şair Juvenalis'in MS 2. yüzyılın başlarında yazdığı Onuncu Yergi'den gelir. Şiir zenginlik, güç, ün, güzellik ya da uzun ömür için dua edenlerle alay eder; çünkü bu dilekler çoğu zaman insanın başına felaket getirir. Juvenalis'e göre dua edilecekse “mens sana in corpore sano”, yani sağlam bir bedende sağlam bir akıl ve ölümden korkmayan cesur bir yürek istenmelidir. Yüzyıllar sonra söz sporun sloganı oldu. Türkiye'de ise “Sağlam kafa sağlam vücutta bulunur” biçimiyle çoğu zaman Atatürk'e mal edilir.
