The idea in context

Turkish dictionaries define gönül as the seat of love, desire, thought, remembrance and regard. That is why a plain English 'heart' is too small: gönül can mean affection, willingness, inward attention, wounded pride, or the place where a decision becomes emotionally true. Most languages keep one word like this — a feeling the neighbouring language needs a whole sentence to reach.

Saudade is the presence of an absence — longing for a person, a place or a time that may be gone, far away, or may never have existed at all. Portuguese speakers treat it as untranslatable, and they are close to right.

It is not quite nostalgia, which looks backwards, nor melancholy, which has no object. Saudade points at something specific and holds the ache and the sweetness together — the pleasure of remembering is part of the feeling, not a consolation for it. The word is bound up with Portugal's centuries of sea voyages and the people left waiting on shore, and it is the emotional engine of fado music. Brazil marks a Day of Saudade on 30 January.

Hiraeth is a Welsh word for longing towards a home that is gone, changed, or perhaps never quite existed — homesickness with nowhere to go back to.

It carries grief, yearning and a kind of loyalty at once, and it is bound up with the history of the Welsh language itself — a tongue that survived centuries of pressure and lost ground it never recovered. Speakers often reach for it about a landscape rather than a house. Related words exist elsewhere: Portuguese saudade, Galician morriña, German Sehnsucht, Romanian dor. That so many languages built a separate word for this suggests it is one of the more common human feelings that English never got round to naming.

Toki Pona is a complete constructed language with about 120 to 140 core words. Its limit is the point: it makes speakers choose the simplest useful shape of a thought.

Toki Pona is often described as minimalist, but the better word is deliberate. Instead of adding a separate word for every shade of meaning, it asks the speaker to build from a small set of roots. Friend becomes good person. Tool becomes a useful thing. The exercise is not only linguistic; it is mental tidying. You find out which parts of a thought are load-bearing and which are decoration.
