With about 5.5 million people, Finland has an estimated three million or more saunas — in homes, offices, even the parliament building — comfortably outnumbering its cars. The sauna is treated less as a luxury than as a basic room for washing, resting and gathering. Large Finnish studies have even linked frequent sauna bathing with lower cardiovascular risk, though the ritual's deepest value is social and mental.
