Awe can make the self feel smaller, and that smaller self may become more generous, curious and connected.

Why it matters

The idea in context

A vast sky, music, mountains, birth, science or art can interrupt the feeling that the self is the centre of everything. Research links awe with humility and prosocial behaviour, while culture has long known how to stage it through ritual, nature and architecture. Feeling small can enlarge the field of care.
