The idea in context

Care ethics does not begin with the fantasy of a perfectly independent person. It begins with the child, the patient, the ageing parent, the exhausted friend, the person who cooks, listens, cleans, remembers and returns. It adds a sharper question to moral life: whose vulnerability is being protected, and whose work has been made invisible?

Flow — losing track of hours in a task — is not luck. It arrives reliably when the challenge sits just above your current skill, the goal is clear, and feedback is immediate. Miss those and it does not come.

Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi interviewed climbers, surgeons, composers and chess players and found them describing the same state in almost identical words: absorbed, effortless, unselfconscious, unaware of time. His key finding was the balance point. Too easy and attention wanders into boredom; too hard and it collapses into anxiety. The narrow band between them is where flow lives, which is why it moves as you improve — what absorbed you last year will bore you next year unless the difficulty rises with you.

Under stress, switching from 'why am I panicking' to 'why are you panicking' — using your own name — measurably reduces distress. The small grammatical distance seems to be doing the work.

Ethan Kross and colleagues found that people who addressed themselves in the second or third person before a stressful task — public speaking, in several studies — performed better, ruminated less afterwards and showed calmer physiological responses than those using 'I'. The effect appears to come from stepping into an observer's position, which is the same move that makes it easier to advise a friend than yourself. It costs nothing and takes a sentence, which is unusual for a psychological finding.

This is the authentic Bruce Lee passage behind many weaker imitations. He first delivered it as dialogue in the TV series Longstreet (1971, episode “The Way of the Intercepting Fist”) and repeated it in his famous December 1971 interview with Pierre Berton — the fullest surviving filmed conversation with Lee. The philosophy comes from his own martial art, Jeet Kune Do: adaptability is not passivity but the ability to flow, fit, strike or yield without becoming rigid.
