In between came decades as a welder's apprentice's son making his way: metalworker's trade school, years as a proofreader, translator and newspaper editor, and a long stretch — nineteen years — without publishing a book at all. When the novels finally arrived they came in a flood, in his unmistakable river-long sentences. Asked about the late start, he was unbothered: the writer he became, he suggested, simply had not existed earlier.
