The second attempt can feel different when the same people saw what went wrong the first time. This time you are not facing an imagined embarrassment; you already know what it felt like. Returning anyway is its own kind of courage.

The story behind the card
Psychologists call the fear behind this the spotlight effect: we overestimate how much others notice us. In a 2000 study by Thomas Gilovich and colleagues, students sent into a room in an embarrassing T-shirt guessed that about half the people there would notice it; only about a quarter did. A 2001 study by Kenneth Savitsky, Nicholas Epley and Gilovich found that people also expect others to judge their public blunders more harshly than they really do.
