Sometimes your hand is already on its way to the phone before you've decided anything. There was no buzz and no message you were waiting for. Next time, pause before you pick it up and notice what you wanted to check.

The story behind the card

Habit researchers say this happens when an action has been repeated often enough in the same situation: the setting itself, such as an idle moment, a queue or a pause in work, starts the movement before any conscious decision. In a 2002 diary study, the psychologist Wendy Wood and colleagues found that about 43 per cent of people's daily actions were repeated almost every day in the same setting, often while they were thinking about something else.
