'Hippopotamus' comes from Greek for 'river horse'.

'Hippopotamus' joins the Greek 'hippos' (horse) and 'potamos' (river): to the ancient Greeks, this huge animal wallowing in the Nile seemed a kind of water-dwelling horse. The same 'hippos' hides inside 'hippodrome', the ancient horse-racing track.
