The idea in context
The first finger-driven touchscreen was built in 1965 by E.A. Johnson at Britain's Royal Radar Establishment, decades before phones. The core idea — sensing the tiny electrical change a fingertip makes — barely changed; it simply took until the 2000s to become cheap, reliable and small enough to put in every pocket.
