The idea in context
Rothko wanted his vast, glowing rectangles of colour to overwhelm the viewer up close, producing something closer to a religious experience than a picture. He asked for them to be hung low and lit dimly — and the immersive Rothko Chapel in Houston was built to do exactly that.
