The idea in context
Thelma Toole was repeatedly turned away before she cornered the novelist Walker Percy, then teaching in New Orleans, and effectively refused to leave until he read it. Percy began expecting to find a reason to stop and instead could not put it down. It was published in 1980, twelve years after his death, and won the Pulitzer for Fiction in 1981.
