The details are wonderful and that is the problem: gilded pavilions, a sleeping draught, young men waking in an engineered heaven. But the title 'Old Man of the Mountain' was invented by Crusaders for the Syrian Ismaili leader and never used in Iran, Alamut had been destroyed before Polo passed through, and the story was current in Europe before he wrote it down. He was repeating what Europeans already believed. The most famous fact about the Assassins is really a fact about their audience.

In 1983 a Soviet early-warning system reported American missiles inbound. The duty officer, Stanislav Petrov, decided it was a malfunction and did not pass it up the chain. He was right.

The satellite system flagged five launches from the United States. Petrov's job was to report; protocol pointed towards retaliation, and Cold War tensions were at their sharpest in years. He reasoned that a genuine first strike would involve hundreds of missiles, not five, and called it a false alarm — with no way of being certain and minutes to decide. The cause turned out to be sunlight glinting off high cloud into the satellite's sensors. He was quietly reassigned rather than decorated, and the story only emerged in the 1990s.

In 1962 a Soviet submarine near Cuba, out of radio contact and under depth charges, prepared to fire a nuclear torpedo. Three officers had to agree. One, Vasili Arkhipov, said no.

Submarine B-59 had been submerged for days in stifling heat, its batteries failing, when American ships began dropping practice charges to force it up. The crew could not know the war had not already started. The captain and political officer agreed to launch; Arkhipov, second in command of the flotilla, held out and talked them into surfacing instead. The West did not learn his name until 2002. He was not decorated for it, and the day is now sometimes called the closest the world came to nuclear war.

Each year, Muslims who are able undertake Hajj to Mecca, completing rituals over several days in one of humanity's great recurring journeys.

Hajj is at once personal and collective: a journey made by individual intention that becomes a visible gathering of the global Muslim community. Its rituals compress history, discipline, equality and longing into movement around sacred places. The scale can be immense, but the meaning is not only scale; it is the old human idea that a body can travel outward while the inner life is being remade.

Before artificial light, much of Europe slept in two shifts: a 'first sleep' from nightfall, an hour or so of quiet wakefulness, then a 'second sleep' until dawn. The pattern appears in court records, prayer books and letters across languages.

Historian Roger Ekirch pieced the habit together from thousands of references — people used the waking interval to pray, talk, mend, or simply lie thinking in the dark. The rhythm faded in the nineteenth century as gaslight and industrial timetables compressed the night. Evidence suggests it ruled pre-industrial Europe rather than all humanity, so it is best read not as a prescription, but as a reminder: the eight-hour block is a recent invention, and a 3am waking was once nothing to fear.
