Emotions are whole-body events involving brain, memory, hormones, breathing, posture and prediction — not just feelings in the head.

Why it matters

The idea in context

Fear can change breathing and muscle tension; grief can change appetite and energy; joy can change posture and attention. Emotion is the body's way of preparing you for meaning and action. That is why calming the body, changing the room or naming the feeling can sometimes change the feeling itself.
