Working memory, the mental space where you hold information for a few seconds while using it, is smaller than the famous “seven items” suggests. When people cannot group or rehearse items, most experiments find room for only about three or four at once.

The story behind the card

The number seven comes from a 1956 paper by the American psychologist George Miller, “The Magical Number Seven, Plus or Minus Two”, which noted that people can repeat back about seven digits. Digits, though, can be grouped and silently rehearsed. In 2001 the psychologist Nelson Cowan reviewed experiments that blocked such tricks and concluded that the real limit is about four “chunks”. A chunk is any unit you already know, so grouping, or chunking, stretches capacity: “BBC NHS FBI” is three chunks, not nine letters. Chess masters can remember a real game position after a glance but lose most of their advantage when the pieces are placed at random. In one famous experiment, a student who was a long-distance runner raised his digit span from seven to about 80 by recoding strings of digits as race times.
