Exercise can raise BDNF, a protein associated with neural growth and plasticity, linking movement to learning, memory and mood.

Why it matters

The idea in context

BDNF is often described as support for brain plasticity. Exercise is one of the body's ways of raising it, which helps explain why a walk can clear the mind before a demanding task. The brain is not floating above the body; it is fed, stressed, calmed and changed by it.
