The peak-end rule says we often remember an experience by its most intense moment and its ending, not by the average of every minute.

Why it matters

The idea in context

A holiday, workout, medical appointment or conversation may later be remembered less by its average minute than by its emotional peak and its ending. The rest does not vanish, but memory compresses experience. Endings matter because the mind gives them unusual weight.
