The Christmas truce of 1914 began on Christmas Eve, when soldiers on the Western Front heard carols from the enemy trenches. By morning thousands of men had climbed out unarmed to swap cigarettes, bury their dead and, in a few places, kick a football about.

The story behind the card
The truce was never ordered and never universal. About 100,000 soldiers took part along stretches of the front, mostly British and German, with some French and Belgian troops too, while elsewhere the fighting went on. Letters home describe Germans placing candles and small Christmas trees on their trench parapets, singing, and calling across no man's land, the strip of ground between the lines. Football was played in a few places, but the familiar image of an organised match is largely later legend; most accounts describe informal kickabouts. Commanders disapproved, and in December 1915 both sides gave orders to prevent a repeat. The war went on for almost four more years.
