Zora Neale Hurston, Their Eyes Were Watching God

Zora Neale Hurston (1891–1960) was an American novelist and anthropologist of the Harlem Renaissance who collected Black folklore in the American South. This sentence opens chapter 3 of her best-known novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937). Its heroine, Janie, is a teenager whose grandmother has arranged her marriage to an older farmer, Logan Killicks, believing it will keep her safe. Janie hopes love will follow the wedding; it does not. The novel follows the years that answer her, through two more marriages and her own hard-won voice.

Georges Duhamel (1884–1966) was a French doctor who spent four years as an army surgeon in the First World War and won the Prix Goncourt, France's best-known literary prize, in 1918. He wrote La Possession du monde (The Heart's Domain) during the war. Shortly before this line he recalls that the war let him see his child only seven times, each time barely recognising him; now he keeps seven images of him. Our feelings, he adds, take their true colour only later, like prints in a photographer's gold bath.

Do not trust your memory. It is a net full of holes. The most beautiful prizes slip through it.

From La Possession du monde (The Heart's Domain, 1919), which the French writer Georges Duhamel wrote while serving as an army surgeon in the First World War. In a chapter on sharing one's discoveries with others, he recalls a friend who said almost every day that he had had a beautiful thought that morning and lost it. So keep a small notebook, Duhamel advises: the soul is a rushing river carrying mud, grass, flowers and gold, and the nuggets must be set aside before the current takes them.

A book must be the axe for the frozen sea within us.

Kafka wrote this on 27 January 1904, aged twenty, to his schoolfriend Oskar Pollak, who became an art historian and was killed in 1915 on the Italian front in the First World War. Kafka was then a law student in Prague; his first book would not appear for another eight years. The letter sets out an early, uncompromising view of what literature should do: not comfort a reader, but shake one, the way a real loss would.

Not everything that is faced can be changed; but nothing can be changed until it is faced.

James Baldwin (1924–1987), the American novelist and essayist, wrote this in 'As Much Truth As One Can Bear', an essay in The New York Times Book Review in January 1962. His subject was novelists: he argued that the American writers of his day avoided looking honestly at their own country. The sentence turns on itself, 'everything' becoming 'nothing', and its promise is modest: facing a problem does not guarantee change, but nothing changes without it. Today it is quoted far beyond literature, often in debates about race and justice.

The only true voyage of discovery, the only fountain of Eternal Youth, would be not to visit strange lands but to possess other eyes.

Marcel Proust (1871–1922) wrote this in The Captive, the fifth volume of his novel In Search of Lost Time, published in 1923, after his death. The narrator is listening to music by Vinteuil, an imaginary composer, and reflects that great artists let us see the world through another person's eyes, then through a hundred others, each showing a different universe. Art, not travel, is the voyage he means. The popular line 'the real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes' is a later paraphrase, often shared as travel advice.
