The idea in context
The version that circulates online — 'not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes' — is a tidied-up shorthand. Proust's actual sentence keeps going, and the extension is the point: to see through the eyes of another, of a hundred others, and so to behold the hundred universes that each of them is. He wrote it in a cork-lined bedroom in Paris, having spent his last years indoors, travelling almost nowhere.
