Ego depletion, the idea that self-control runs on a limited mental resource that gets used up, was one of social psychology's most cited findings for almost two decades. In 2016 a coordinated replication across 23 labs and more than 2,000 participants found an effect close to zero.

The story behind the card

The idea goes back to a 1998 experiment led by the psychologist Roy Baumeister. Volunteers who had skipped a meal sat in front of freshly baked chocolate-chip cookies; some were allowed to eat them, others had to eat radishes instead. Those who had resisted the cookies then gave up sooner on an unsolvable puzzle, as if their willpower had been spent. Dozens of follow-up studies reported similar effects, and the idea that willpower works like a muscle reached textbooks and self-help books. The 2016 project was a registered replication: the labs agreed the method in advance and published whatever they found. It became a landmark of psychology's replication crisis, the discovery that many well-known findings do not hold up when other labs repeat them. Some researchers still defend narrower versions of the theory.
