The modern zip was designed by Gideon Sundback, a Swedish-born engineer working in the United States. Around 1913 he replaced the unreliable hooks of Whitcomb Judson's earlier fastener with two facing rows of small teeth locked together by a slider. He patented it in 1917 and built machines to make the parts in bulk.

The story behind the card
Judson, a Chicago engineer, showed his 'clasp locker' for boots and shoes at the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago, but it was clumsy and attracted little interest. Sundback, who joined Judson's company in 1906, raised the number of teeth from four to ten or eleven per inch (2.5 centimetres), about one every 2.5 millimetres, and designed the machinery that made them. The word 'zipper' came in 1923 from the B. F. Goodrich Company, which put the fastener on rubber boots and named it after the sound it made; in Britain it became the 'zip'. Clothes adopted it slowly: first jackets and children's clothing, then men's trousers from about 1937.
