An eggcorn is a slip that swaps an unfamiliar word for one that seems to make sense, like writing "egg corns" for "acorns": an acorn is roughly egg-shaped. Linguist Mark Liberman discussed that example in September 2003, and a week later Geoffrey Pullum proposed naming the whole pattern after it.

The story behind the card

Liberman and Pullum were writing on Language Log, a blog run by linguists. The existing labels did not fit. A malapropism is a similar-sounding word that makes no sense in context; a mondegreen is a misheard phrase, often from a song; a folk etymology is a reshaping a whole community has adopted, as when the old word 'shamefast' became 'shamefaced'. An eggcorn can be one person's private logic. Familiar English examples include "for all intensive purposes" and "old-timers' disease" for Alzheimer's disease. The Oxford English Dictionary added 'eggcorn' in September 2010.

İngilizcede bilinen örnekler arasında “for all intents and purposes” (her bakımdan) yerine “for all intensive purposes”, Alzheimer hastalığı yerine de “old-timers' disease” (yaşlıların hastalığı) vardır. Oxford İngilizce Sözlüğü “eggcorn” sözcüğünü Eylül 2010'da ekledi.

Next card in the archiveThat upside-down-looking ə is called schwa. It is the weak vowel heard in many unstressed English syllables: the first sound in "about," for example, and the second vowel in "given." English often reduces vowels when stress moves elsewhere, so a written vowel does not always keep the full sound you might expect from its spelling.Read next →
