Return to a childhood place and an old staircase may have far fewer steps than memory gave it. The stairs did not need to shrink; your body, stride and point of view changed.

The story behind the card

Nothing about the staircase changes; what changes is the ruler you measure it with. A young child's body is smaller, each step takes more effort, and the climb is remembered at that scale. An adult's longer legs and greater strength make the same stairs feel minor, so they seem to have shrunk even though every step is exactly where it always was.
