The story behind the card
This wording is not in any Buddhist scripture. It reworks a short discourse in the Anguttara Nikaya (3.131), part of the Pali Canon, which contrasts things done in secret with three that shine openly: the moon, the sun, and the teaching of the Tathagata, a title the Buddha used for himself. In 1907 the Indian Buddhist writer P. Lakshmi Narasu rendered them as three things that shine before the world and cannot be hidden. Later versions turned a point about openness into a promise that truth will come out.

Bu ifade hiçbir Budist kutsal metninde geçmez. Pali Kanonu'ndaki Anguttara Nikaya'da (3.131) yer alan kısa bir öğretinin yeniden yazılmış hâlidir. O metin, gizlilik içinde yürütülen şeylerle açıkça parlayan üç şeyi karşılaştırır: ay, güneş ve Tathagata'nın öğretisi. Tathagata, Buda'nın kendisi için kullandığı bir unvandır. Hintli Budist yazar P. Lakshmi Narasu 1907'de bunları dünyanın önünde parlayan ve gizlenemeyen üç şey diye aktardı. Sonraki sürümler, açıklık üzerine bir sözü gerçeğin er geç ortaya çıkacağı vaadine çevirdi; Türkçedeki “Güneş balçıkla sıvanmaz” atasözü de bu anlama yakındır.
