The story behind the card
Your brain usually corrects for distance: a house at the end of the street makes a small image on your eye, yet you still see it as house-sized. Psychologists call this size constancy. It relies on cues such as the ground stretching away and familiar objects nearby. From a plane about ten kilometres up, those cues are weak or missing, so the brain takes the tiny image more at face value and the town looks like a model, though nothing in it has changed.
