The wood frog can survive winter frozen nearly solid: its heart stops, its blood stops flowing, and up to two-thirds of the water in its body turns to ice — then it thaws and hops away in spring.

As it freezes, the frog floods its cells with glucose, a natural antifreeze that keeps them from being destroyed by ice. For weeks it shows no heartbeat, no breath, no measurable brain activity — by most definitions, not alive — and then it simply resumes. Nature keeps a stranger set of doors between living and not-living than we usually allow ourselves to imagine.

Coffee's story begins with wild plants in Ethiopia; it was cultivated and traded through Yemen, and the first true coffee houses opened in the 16th-century Ottoman world, including Istanbul.

Those houses became places to talk, argue, play games and share news, so influential that rulers occasionally tried to ban them for stirring up too much conversation. A drink now tied to solitary mornings and to-go cups was, for centuries, one of the world's great engines of public life.

In 2025 doctors treated an infant known as 'Baby KJ' with a personalized CRISPR-based gene-editing therapy designed for his specific mutation.

KJ was born with CPS1 deficiency, a rare disorder that lets ammonia build to toxic levels. A team at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and Penn designed, tested and delivered a bespoke gene-editing therapy in roughly six months. He improved and went home — a proof of principle that treatments might one day be tailored to a patient in weeks.

In 2025 a man lived for a record 271 days with a gene-edited pig kidney — the longest anyone has yet been kept alive by an organ from another species.

Tim Andrews received the kidney in early 2025; it filtered his blood for about nine months before being removed. Researchers edit the pig's genes to switch off the traits that make the human body reject the organ. With human donors far too few, animal organs — xenotransplants — are moving from experiment towards carefully watched clinical trials.

The 1904 Olympic marathon was run in searing heat on dust roads with one water stop. The first man home had ridden 18 km in a car; the actual winner was carried over the line, having been dosed with strychnine and brandy by his own trainers.

Of 32 starters, 14 finished. Fred Lorz was hailed the winner before officials learned he had hitched a lift when his legs gave out, then rejoined on foot. Thomas Hicks was given strychnine — a stimulant in tiny doses, a poison in larger ones — mixed with brandy and egg white, and finished barely conscious. A Cuban runner, Félix Carvajal, had lost his money gambling, ran in cut-off trousers and street shoes, and stopped to eat orchard apples that made him ill. He still came fourth.

In 1847 Ignaz Semmelweis worked out that doctors were carrying death from the mortuary to the maternity ward on their hands. Washing them cut deaths tenfold. His colleagues rejected the idea, and he died in an asylum.

At the Vienna General Hospital, the ward staffed by doctors had a death rate several times that of the ward staffed by midwives. Semmelweis noticed the doctors came straight from performing autopsies, ordered handwashing in chlorinated lime, and watched mortality collapse. He could not explain why it worked — germ theory was still years away — and the profession took the implication, that they were the cause, as an insult. He was dismissed, declined, and died at 47 of an infection. Lister and Pasteur proved him right within two decades.

In 1896 Henri Becquerel planned to test whether sunlight made uranium salts glow. Paris clouded over, so he shut everything in a drawer. Days later the photographic plate was fogged anyway — the uranium had been shining on its own.

His hypothesis was wrong in the most productive way possible: he thought sunlight was required, and the experiment proved it was not. Uranium emitted something entirely by itself. Marie and Pierre Curie took up the work, named the phenomenon radioactivity, and the three shared the 1903 Nobel Prize in Physics. A week of bad weather in Paris opened the door to nuclear physics, medical imaging and radiotherapy — and to a century of learning, painfully, how to handle what was found.

Cattle in 1930s America were bleeding to death from spoiled hay. The chemical behind it became a rat poison — and then warfarin, the blood thinner that has kept millions of people from having strokes.

A Wisconsin farmer drove through a blizzard in 1933 with a dead cow and a bucket of blood that would not clot, looking for someone who could explain it. Biochemist Karl Link traced it to mouldy sweet clover, which produces an anticoagulant. Sold first as rat poison — rats die of internal bleeding — it was later found safe in controlled human doses. President Eisenhower was given it after his heart attack in 1955, which did much for its reputation. It remains one of the most prescribed drugs in the world.

A chemist searching for clear gun sights in 1942 kept producing a compound that stuck to everything and ruined his equipment. He set it aside twice. Only years later did he realise the sticking was the product.

Cyanoacrylate bonded instantly to anything faintly damp — including skin and lab glass — which made it useless for the optics work Coover was doing. He rediscovered it in 1951 while developing heat-resistant aircraft canopies, and this time recognised what he had: an adhesive needing no heat or pressure. It reached shops in 1958. Field surgeons in Vietnam used a spray version to close wounds fast enough to get men to hospital, and medical-grade cyanoacrylate still seals surgical incisions today.

For years London poured its waste into the Thames and did nothing. Then the summer of 1858 grew hot, the river stank so badly that Parliament soaked its curtains in chloride of lime, and the money for a sewer system was approved in eighteen days.

Members debated moving upriver to Hampton Court. Joseph Bazalgette was given the job and built 132 km of main sewers and 1,700 km of street sewers, deliberately sizing the pipes at twice the diameter the calculations required — a decision that kept them working for well over a century. Cholera in London effectively ended, though the connection to dirty water was still disputed at the time. Much of Bazalgette's brickwork is still carrying London's waste today.

In 1854 a Soho cholera outbreak killed hundreds in ten days. John Snow mapped every death, saw them cluster around a single water pump, and persuaded the parish to remove its handle. The outbreak stopped.

Nobody yet accepted that water carried disease; the consensus blamed bad air. Snow's map of Broad Street, with a black bar for each death, is the founding document of epidemiology and one of the most influential graphics ever drawn. He also spotted the exceptions that proved him right — the local brewery workers, who drank beer, were untouched. The authorities put the pump handle back once the panic passed. Snow died four years later, before his idea was generally accepted.

In the early 1990s a Welsh trial tested a new compound for angina. It did little for chest pain, but the men in the study were oddly reluctant to hand back the leftover tablets. The drug was renamed Viagra.

Sildenafil was designed to relax blood vessels and improve blood flow to the heart. It underperformed on that measure at Pfizer's trial site in Merthyr Tydfil, and the study was heading for closure when nurses reported the persistent side effect volunteers were declining to discuss in detail. The company changed direction, and it was approved in 1998. The same molecule is also used, under a different name, to treat pulmonary hypertension in babies — the use it was closest to being designed for all along.

Cancer surgery left Henri Matisse unable to stand at an easel. Instead of stopping, he began cutting painted paper with scissors from his bed — and made the boldest work of his life.

After abdominal surgery in 1941 he was given months to live, and called the years that followed 'a second life'. Too weak to paint standing, he had assistants pin gouache-painted sheets to the walls of his room while he cut shapes with scissors and directed their placement from a wheelchair or bed. He called it drawing with scissors — the line and the colour arriving in a single cut. The cut-outs, made in his seventies and eighties, are now considered among the most radical things he ever did.

Rheumatoid arthritis deformed Pierre-Auguste Renoir's hands so badly he could no longer grip. He kept painting for another twenty years, with brushes placed into his bandaged fingers.

By his sixties the disease had fused and twisted his joints, and he needed help to move. Assistants wrapped his hands and set a brush between his fingers so he could work by moving his whole arm and shoulder. He painted almost daily until the year he died, and in his last decade also took up sculpture, directing an assistant's hands to shape what he could no longer model himself. Asked why he continued through the pain, he is said to have replied that the pain passes, but the beauty remains.

Cataracts turned Claude Monet's world muddy yellow and red. He kept painting the water lilies anyway, and after surgery in 1923 restored his sight, he went back and reworked canvases he had made half-blind.

Diagnosed in 1912, Monet described colours losing their intensity and reds looking muddy; he began labelling his tubes and keeping a fixed order on his palette so he could paint by system rather than by eye. Some canvases from those years are startlingly hot in tone. He resisted surgery for a decade, terrified it would ruin what vision he had, and finally had a lens removed in 1923. Seeing clearly again, he destroyed some of the works and reworked others. The great Orangerie panels were finished in this period.

John Milton lost his sight completely by 1652 and had backed the losing side of a civil war. Blind, politically disgraced and composing at night from memory, he dictated Paradise Lost to whoever would write it down.

He would hold long passages in his head overnight and wait, by his own account impatiently, to be 'milked' in the morning by a daughter, friend or paid amanuensis. The poem runs to more than ten thousand lines of blank verse and was published in 1667, after the Restoration had left him lucky to be alive at all. He sold the rights for £5, with a further £5 due on the second edition. He wrote in it that the mind is its own place, and can make a heaven of hell.

Patients told outright that they were being given inert pills — no deception at all — still improved in trials for chronic back pain and irritable bowel syndrome. The effect survived knowing.

Ted Kaptchuk's group at Harvard ran the first trials, handing patients bottles labelled 'placebo pills' and explaining plainly that they contained no active drug. Symptoms still eased, more than in patients given nothing. The likeliest explanations involve expectation, the ritual of treatment and the attention of a clinician, all of which have measurable effects on symptom perception. It works on subjective symptoms such as pain, fatigue and nausea — not on tumours or infections. It is a real effect with strict limits, and it is not a substitute for treatment.

Focused work drains a specific mental resource, and city streets keep draining it because they demand constant filtering. Natural settings hold attention gently instead, letting the depleted system recover.

Rachel and Stephen Kaplan proposed the distinction: directed attention, which we spend on concentration and must be replenished, and 'soft fascination' — moving leaves, water, clouds — which occupies the mind without effort. Studies since have found improvements in working memory and error rates after walks in parks compared with walks in traffic, with the same distance and exertion. The practical read is modest but consistent: when your concentration is gone, more effort works badly, and twenty unhurried minutes among trees works better.

Working muscle releases signalling molecules into the blood that reach the brain, liver, bone and immune system. Muscle is not just for moving — it is a gland you operate by using it.

The Danish physiologist Bente Klarlund Pedersen named these molecules myokines in 2003, and hundreds have since been identified. They help explain why exercise affects so much beyond fitness — mood, blood sugar handling, bone density, inflammation, and the brain's capacity to form new connections. It reframes what training is for: not primarily an appearance or a weight number, but the regular activation of a signalling organ that otherwise stays quiet. The dose required is far lower than most people assume.

Every waking hour, adenosine accumulates in the brain and builds the pressure to sleep. Caffeine does not remove it — it blocks the receptors. The adenosine is still there, and arrives all at once when the caffeine clears.

Adenosine is a by-product of the brain using energy, so the longer you are awake the more of it collects, and the heavier sleep feels. Caffeine is shaped enough like adenosine to sit in its receptors without activating them, which mutes the signal while the molecule keeps accumulating behind it. That is the afternoon crash: the block wears off and the full backlog registers at once. Caffeine's half-life is around five hours, so a late-afternoon coffee still has a quarter of its dose working at midnight.

Shinrin-yoku — forest bathing — is not a hike. It is unhurried time among trees with the phone away, and Japan has treated it as preventive medicine since the 1980s.

The term was coined by Japan's forestry ministry in 1982, and the country now designates dozens of official forest-therapy sites. Studies have reported lower blood pressure, reduced cortisol and improved mood after sessions, though many are small and comparing forest with city confounds air quality, noise and traffic. What is not in doubt is the direction. Several countries now run nature-prescription schemes, and the mechanism may simply be a combination of quiet, clean air, gentle movement and undemanding attention.
