In 2025 scientists used artificial intelligence to design the genomes of working viruses that attack bacteria — the first time AI had written a complete viral genome that then functioned in the lab.

The targets were bacteriophages — harmless-to-humans viruses that infect bacteria. An AI model trained on natural genomes proposed new ones; in the lab, 16 of these designs assembled into phages that could kill their bacterial hosts. It is an early, carefully bounded step towards designing biology, and it arrives with real questions about how such power should be governed.

In March 2025 astronomers confirmed 128 new moons around Saturn in one announcement, lifting its total to 274 — more than all the other planets' moons put together.

A team using the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope stacked many images to reveal faint specks orbiting the planet. Most of the new moons are tiny, kilometre-scale chunks, probably shards from larger moons shattered by old collisions. Saturn had already overtaken Jupiter as the Solar System's 'moon king,' and this widened its lead dramatically.

For the first time, in 2025, scientists recorded a shark actively making sound — a small rig shark producing sharp clicks when handled.

Sharks were long thought to be silent, lacking the swim bladders many noisy fish use. Researchers in New Zealand caught the clicks on tape, likely made by the shark snapping its flat, plate-like teeth together. What the clicks are for is still unknown — perhaps a startle response — but they overturn the idea that sharks move through the sea without a voice.

In 2025 a company announced pups engineered to resemble the extinct dire wolf, made by editing 20 spots in the genome of an ordinary grey wolf.

Working from DNA in a 13,000-year-old tooth and a 72,000-year-old skull, the team tweaked grey-wolf embryos to bring back dire-wolf traits like size and a pale coat, producing pups named Romulus, Remus and Khaleesi. Scientists were quick to note these are edited grey wolves, not true dire wolves brought back to life. Still, it is a striking test of how far gene editing can reach into the past.

The wombat is the only known animal that produces cube-shaped droppings — up to a hundred neat little cubes a night.

Scientists who studied wombat intestines found that the last stretch has stiff and stretchy patches that mould the drying waste into cubes. The shape has a purpose: wombats stack their droppings on rocks and logs to mark territory, and cubes do not roll away. The finding earned a share of the 2019 Ig Nobel Prize, which honours research that makes you laugh, then think.

The mantis shrimp throws the fastest punch in the animal kingdom — so fast it boils the water around its claw for an instant.

Its club-like limb accelerates like a bullet, moving so quickly that the water can't fill the space behind it and forms a vapour bubble. When that bubble collapses it releases a flash of heat and a shockwave, so the prey is hit twice — by the strike and by the burst. Some species can shatter aquarium glass, and their eyes are among the most complex known.

When a glass frog sleeps, it turns almost transparent by pumping most of its red blood cells into its liver — hiding the colour that would give it away.

Red blood cells are what make blood visible, so to disappear against a leaf the frog tucks up to nine-tenths of them inside a mirror-like liver while it rests. Somehow it does this without its blood clotting, a trick doctors would love to understand. At night, when it needs to move and hunt, the cells flow back out and the frog turns solid again.

By the botanical rules, a banana counts as a berry — while a strawberry does not.

To a botanist, a berry is a fruit that grows from a single flower with one ovary and carries its seeds inside the flesh — which fits bananas, grapes and even tomatoes. A strawberry grows differently: its tiny 'seeds' on the outside are actually the true fruits, so it is not a berry at all. The everyday word and the scientific one simply drew their lines in different places.

In the deep ocean, glowing is normal: about three-quarters of the animals living there make their own light.

A large survey of the water off California found that roughly 76% of the animals counted could produce light through bioluminescence. Down where sunlight never reaches, living light does the work instead — luring prey, confusing predators, and signalling to mates. What looks to us like an exotic trick is, in the largest living space on Earth, the ordinary way to be seen.

Sharks have swum the oceans for more than 400 million years — appearing before the first trees grew, and possibly before Saturn's current rings formed.

Sharks arose over 400 million years ago, while the earliest true trees came later, around 380 million years ago. Saturn's bright rings may be younger still — some evidence suggests the current ring system is only a few hundred million years old, so dinosaurs might have looked up at a ringless Saturn. Sharks have outlasted several mass extinctions, quietly persisting while the world rearranged itself around them.

Across decades of psychiatric records, researchers have found very few confirmed cases of schizophrenia in people born completely blind — one of the strangest open questions in medicine.

The clearest evidence comes from Western Australia, where Vera Morgan's team followed every one of 467,945 children born between 1980 and 2001. Around 1,870 went on to develop a psychotic illness — but not one of the 66 children born with cortical blindness did. The numbers are small, so nobody is calling it settled. One leading explanation is that schizophrenia involves the brain trusting its own predictions over the evidence of the senses; sight is our dominant prediction machine, so a brain that never built a visual model may be protected from that particular failure mode. It is a rare case where an absence — of cases, of vision — may be a clue.

When a song lands slightly off the beat, the brain's reward system can respond — we often enjoy music most when it bends the pattern without breaking it.

Your brain is a prediction engine: it guesses where the next beat falls, then checks. A perfectly regular rhythm is guessed correctly every time and quickly becomes dull. Syncopation — a note landing just off the expected beat — produces a small prediction error, and dopamine follows. Peter Vuust and colleagues found the effect follows an inverted U: too simple and there is nothing to be surprised by, too chaotic and the brain cannot hold a pattern to be surprised against. The sweet spot in the middle is what musicians have always called groove — and it is the reason a track that sounds slightly 'wrong' is the one you cannot sit still through.

As the story goes, Fats Waller was bundled into a car by armed men in 1926, driven to a Chicago party, and discovered he was the surprise gift for Al Capone's birthday. He played for three days and left with his pockets full of hundred-dollar bills.

Waller was leaving a gig in Chicago when four men with guns pushed him into a car — he assumed he was about to die. Instead he was marched to a piano and told to play. The guest of honour, delighted, kept him there for three days on champagne and food, and the guests stuffed cash into his pockets as tips. The tale comes chiefly from his son Maurice's account rather than any police record, so historians file it as very probably true rather than proven. Either way, Waller was one of the great showmen of the age — 'Ain't Misbehavin'' is his — and he apparently went home a good deal richer than he expected to.

In 1898 a struggling writer published a novel about the largest liner ever built — the Titan — striking an iceberg on an April night in the North Atlantic and going down with most aboard, for want of lifeboats. The Titanic sailed fourteen years later.

The parallels are hard to shake off: both ships were the largest afloat, both were called practically unsinkable, both carried far too few lifeboats, both were running fast through icy water on the northern route, and both names differ by four letters. Robertson was a former merchant sailor, and the likeliest explanation is expertise rather than prophecy — he knew the size ships were heading towards, knew the lifeboat regulations were inadequate, and knew the North Atlantic. He wrote the disaster the industry was building for itself. After 1912 the book was hurriedly reissued, and it has never quite been read as fiction since.

Violet Jessop was aboard the Olympic when it was rammed, aboard the Titanic when it sank, and aboard the Britannic when it went down too. She survived all three and kept going to sea for another thirty years.

Jessop was a stewardess on the Olympic in 1911 when a warship struck it, a stewardess on the Titanic in 1912 when she was put into a lifeboat holding a stranger's baby, and a nurse on the hospital ship Britannic in 1916 when it hit a mine in the Aegean. Sucked towards the Britannic's still-turning propellers, she jumped from her lifeboat and struck her head on the keel — an injury she later credited a thick head of hair with softening. She went back to work on liners and retired only in the 1950s, to a cottage in Suffolk.

Tsutomu Yamaguchi was on a business trip in Hiroshima on 6 August 1945. Burned and half-deaf, he travelled home the next day — to Nagasaki, arriving in time for the second bomb.

An engineer for Mitsubishi, Yamaguchi was three kilometres from the Hiroshima hypocentre. He made it back to Nagasaki and was describing the blast to a disbelieving supervisor on 9 August when the second flash filled the window. He lived to 93. In 2009 Japan formally recognised him as the only official double survivor — though others were caught by both — and he spent his last years speaking against nuclear weapons, saying his survival appeared to have been given to him as a task.

The American Civil War opened with shells landing on Wilmer McLean's Virginia farm. He moved his family 190 km away to escape it — and four years later the surrender was signed in his front parlour.

In July 1861 the First Battle of Bull Run was fought across McLean's land; a shell is said to have come down through his kitchen. A grocer with no wish to be at the centre of a war, he moved south to the quiet village of Appomattox Court House. On 9 April 1865, officers looking for a suitable room knocked on his door, and Lee surrendered to Grant in his parlour. Souvenir-hunting officers then stripped the furniture and carried it off, some of them leaving money on the floor as they went.

Abraham Lincoln's son was pushed off a crowded train platform and pulled back to safety by a stranger. The stranger was Edwin Booth — brother of the man who would shoot his father.

Robert Todd Lincoln told the story himself in a letter of 1909. Waiting for a sleeping-car ticket at Jersey City, he was pressed against a moving carriage and dropped into the gap; a hand seized his collar and hauled him out. He turned and recognised Edwin Booth, the most celebrated American actor of the age. Neither knew what was coming. Within about a year or two Edwin's younger brother John Wilkes Booth shot the president at Ford's Theatre — and Edwin, told later of the rescue, is said to have taken some comfort from it.

In 1954 Ann Hodges was asleep on her sofa in Alabama when a 4-kilogram rock from space came through the ceiling, bounced off her radio and struck her hip. She is the only person confirmed to have been injured by a meteorite.

The meteorite was around 4.5 billion years old and had split in the atmosphere; the other piece landed miles away. Hodges was left with a spectacular bruise and, almost at once, a legal fight — her landlady claimed the rock belonged to the house. Hodges eventually kept it for a $500 settlement and later gave it to the Alabama Museum of Natural History. The attention exhausted her. Given how much of Earth is ocean and empty ground, the odds of a stone that has crossed the Solar System finding a sofa are almost past arithmetic.

In 1838 Edgar Allan Poe wrote a novel in which shipwrecked sailors draw lots and eat the cabin boy, Richard Parker. Forty-six years later a real crew was rescued having done exactly that — to a cabin boy called Richard Parker.

Poe's only novel, The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket, contains the scene almost as a throwaway. In 1884 the yacht Mignonette sank in the South Atlantic and four survivors drifted for weeks; they killed and ate the seventeen-year-old cabin boy, whose name was Richard Parker. The case became R v Dudley and Stephens, the decision every English law student still reads on whether necessity can excuse murder. It is said a relative noticed the resemblance to Poe's book years later. The name resurfaced once more in Life of Pi, given to the tiger.

Roy Sullivan, a park ranger in Virginia, was struck by lightning seven separate times between 1942 and 1977 and survived every one. It cost him a toenail, his eyebrows, and several hats set on fire.

Sullivan worked in Shenandoah National Park, high ground in a region of violent summer storms, which goes some way to explaining the first strike or two. Seven is another matter — the odds of being hit even once in a lifetime are roughly one in fifteen thousand. He grew wary of storms and reported that people began to avoid standing near him. He kept the burnt hats. Guinness still lists him as the human being struck by lightning more times than any other on record.

For centuries nobody knew where birds went in winter — theories included hibernating in mud and flying to the Moon. In 1822 a stork landed in Germany with an African hunting spear through its neck, and the question was settled.

The bird had been speared in central Africa, survived, and completed its migration north with 80 cm of wood still through it. Germans call it the Pfeilstorch — the arrow stork. Until then, even serious naturalists had proposed that swallows overwintered in lake mud, and one seventeenth-century Englishman argued birds flew to the Moon. Roughly two dozen more arrow storks have turned up since, but the 1822 bird is the one that changed minds. It is still on display in Rostock, standing calmly with the spear through its neck.
