Cleopatra lived closer in time to the first Moon landing than to the building of the Great Pyramid of Giza.

The Great Pyramid was raised around 2560 BCE. Cleopatra died in 30 BCE — about 2,500 years later. The Apollo Moon landing came in 1969, roughly 2,000 years after her. The pyramids were already unimaginably ancient monuments in her own lifetime. Deep time hides in plain sight: the past we lump together as 'ancient' is stretched across gulfs longer than all of recorded history since.

The Greenland shark is the longest-living vertebrate known, with lifespans estimated at up to about 400 years — meaning some alive today were born before Shakespeare.

Living in the cold, dark Arctic deep, these sharks grow barely a centimetre a year and may not reproduce until around 150 years old. Scientists estimated their age by radiocarbon-dating the lenses of their eyes. A creature that measures its life in centuries is a quiet argument for patience: some things simply cannot be hurried into being.

A jellyfish the size of a fingernail, Turritopsis dohrnii, can respond to stress or injury by reverting its cells to an earlier stage — effectively winding back its own biological clock.

Instead of dying, an adult can transform back into a polyp, the juvenile form it began as, and start its life cycle over. This has earned it the name 'the immortal jellyfish'. It doesn't cheat death entirely — predators and disease still catch it — but it blurs the line we assume is fixed between growing up and growing old.

A returning honeybee tells the hive where food is by dancing: the angle of its 'waggle' encodes the direction relative to the sun, and its duration encodes the distance.

Decoded by Karl von Frisch, who won a Nobel Prize for it, the waggle dance is one of the few known symbolic languages outside humans. A bee that has found flowers a kilometre away can translate that journey into a figure-of-eight on a vertical honeycomb, in the dark, and dozens of others will read it and fly straight there. Communication, it turns out, did not wait for words.

Sea otters often sleep floating on their backs holding paws with one another, forming groups called rafts so they don't drift apart on the current.

They may also wrap themselves in strands of kelp to stay anchored while they rest. Otters have no thick blubber like other sea mammals; they survive the cold on dense fur and constant effort. That a creature working so hard to stay warm and afloat still reaches out for another before sleep is one of nature's small, unforced tendernesses.

Venus spins so slowly that one full rotation — a Venusian day — takes longer than the time it needs to orbit the Sun. A day there is longer than its year.

Venus turns once every 243 Earth days, but circles the Sun in about 225. Stranger still, it spins backwards compared with most planets, so on Venus the Sun would rise in the west. It's a reminder that the rhythms we treat as universal — day, year, sunrise in the east — are just the habits of our particular world.

For centuries the deepest blue available to painters, ultramarine, was ground from lapis lazuli mined in one remote region of Afghanistan — and it cost more than gold.

Renaissance patrons specified in contracts exactly how much of it a painter could use, and artists reserved the precious pigment for the robe of the Virgin Mary. The colour we now squeeze thoughtlessly from a tube was once a measure of devotion and wealth. Value, like beauty, is partly a story a time agrees to tell.

Honey can remain edible for thousands of years when sealed and kept dry; archaeologists have reported ancient Egyptian jars still unspoiled after more than 3,000 years.

The reason is chemistry: honey contains very little water, is naturally acidic, and includes an enzyme from bees that can produce small amounts of hydrogen peroxide. Together they create an environment almost no microbe can use. Kept dry, honey does not fight decay so much as deny it a place to begin.

In 1980, IBM's first gigabyte-class hard drive was roughly refrigerator-sized, weighed about 250 kilograms and sold for around $40,000.

Today, a fingernail-sized memory card can hold hundreds of times as much. In four decades, storage moved from hardware delivered by forklift to something small enough to disappear in a drawer. The revolution was not one dramatic leap; it was thousands of refinements compounding until the old machine looked prehistoric.

Australia's superb lyrebird is one of the world's great mimics, able to reproduce the calls of many other bird species with startling accuracy, weaving them into its own song.

A male's display can run through a medley of other birds in sequence, each rendered so faithfully that the originals answer back. In captivity, individuals have even been recorded copying human-made sounds. It is courtship as performance: a bird proving its fitness not by force but by the sheer range of what it has listened to and remembered.

The wood frog can survive winter frozen nearly solid: its heart stops, its blood stops flowing, and up to two-thirds of the water in its body turns to ice — then it thaws and hops away in spring.

As it freezes, the frog floods its cells with glucose, a natural antifreeze that keeps them from being destroyed by ice. For weeks it shows no heartbeat, no breath, no measurable brain activity — by most definitions, not alive — and then it simply resumes. Nature keeps a stranger set of doors between living and not-living than we usually allow ourselves to imagine.

The blue whale is the largest animal known to have ever lived, reaching about 30 metres and 150 tonnes — larger than any dinosaur, with a heart roughly the size of a small car.

It feeds almost entirely on krill, tiny shrimp-like creatures a few centimetres long, swallowing several tonnes a day. A newborn already weighs more than an adult elephant and gains around 90 kilograms a day on its mother's milk. The mightiest body the planet has produced is built, quietly, from some of its smallest animals.

The air inside a lightning bolt can reach roughly 30,000°C — about five times hotter than the visible surface of the Sun.

That sudden heat makes the air expand explosively, and the shockwave is what we hear as thunder. The whole event lasts a fraction of a second, yet for that instant a thin channel of sky is one of the hottest places in the solar system. Immense power does not always mean lasting presence; some of it arrives and is gone before the sound catches up.

Mount Everest rises by a few millimetres each year, pushed up as the Indian tectonic plate keeps grinding into Asia.

The same slow collision that first raised the Himalayas roughly 50 million years ago has never stopped. Rock that now stands nearly nine kilometres up once lay on an ancient seabed — which is why fossil sea creatures can be found near the summit. The most solid, permanent thing you can imagine, a mountain, is in fact mid-motion.

At Çatalhöyük in Turkey, a town of some 9,000 years ago, houses were packed so tightly together that there were no streets — people walked across the rooftops and climbed down into their homes through holes in the ceiling.

Homes were entered by ladder from above, and the dead were often buried beneath the very floors the living slept on. With up to several thousand residents, it is one of the earliest large settlements we know, built before writing, money or kings. It shows that 'city life' was being invented, and re-invented, long before the cities we picture.

Coffee's story begins with wild plants in Ethiopia; it was cultivated and traded through Yemen, and the first true coffee houses opened in the 16th-century Ottoman world, including Istanbul.

Those houses became places to talk, argue, play games and share news, so influential that rulers occasionally tried to ban them for stirring up too much conversation. A drink now tied to solitary mornings and to-go cups was, for centuries, one of the world's great engines of public life.

The dazzling blue of a morpho butterfly's wings contains no blue pigment; the colour comes from microscopic structures that bend and reflect light.

Layers finer than a wavelength of light interfere so that mostly blue bounces back to your eye — the same trick behind a peacock's shimmer and some blue feathers. Crush the wing and the blue vanishes, because it was never a substance, only an arrangement. Some of the most vivid things we see are made of structure, not stuff.

The naked mole-rat can live past thirty — extraordinary for a rodent its size — and shows striking resistance to cancer and little of the rising death rate that age usually brings.

Living in dark underground colonies in East Africa, organised almost like insects around a single breeding queen, it feels no pain from certain acids and can survive with very little oxygen. Scientists study it not for oddity but for clues: an animal that ages so differently hints that the decline we treat as inevitable may be more negotiable than it looks.

At the equator, Earth's rotation carries you eastward at more than 1,600 kilometres an hour — and you feel nothing at all.

You sense motion only when it changes, and the planet's spin is almost perfectly steady, so it stays invisible to your body. On top of that, Earth is racing around the Sun at about 30 kilometres a second. Stillness, it turns out, is never truly still; it is only motion so smooth and so shared that everything around you moves with it.

Some Roman concrete has stood in seawater for 2,000 years while modern concrete crumbles in decades; recent research suggests it can even heal its own cracks.

Roman builders mixed lime so that tiny reactive fragments remained inside the concrete. When water later entered a crack, those fragments could dissolve and form minerals that sealed the gap. Two thousand years later, engineers are still studying a material that makes progress look less like replacement and more like remembering.
