Widely attached to the Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish online, but without a stable poem or collection reference, so the attribution stays uncertain. It fits his emotional weather: in Darwish's poetry, love and exile often become places entered through memory or dream when ordinary life cannot hold them.

This comes from Emily Dickinson's short poem usually titled by its first line, 'Nature — sometimes sears a Sapling.' The poem compares wounded trees with human inwardness: plants may visibly bear damage into later seasons, while people with souls can suffer smaller inner deaths again and again.

This sentence is famous under Pablo Neruda's name, but the source trail is weak; even large quotation sites flag it as attributed without a source. It still belongs thematically beside Neruda's love poetry, where eros is not decoration but a force that lets mortal life feel bearable, fierce, and worth inhabiting.

Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.

The most famous sentence Jung never quite wrote: it condenses his thinking but appears in this form nowhere in his Collected Works. The closest authentic passages are in Aion (1951), where Jung writes that when an inner situation is not made conscious, it happens outside, as fate. The idea is fully his: ignored inner material does not disappear — it returns as projection, repetition and a life pattern mistaken for destiny.

Your visions will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams. Who looks inside, awakes.

This one is genuine: Jung wrote it in a letter to Fanny Bowditch dated 22 October 1916, published in C.G. Jung Letters, Volume 1. The contrast is the heart of his method: outward looking produces dreams — fantasy and projection; inward looking is the harder work of waking, meeting one's own motives and shadows without disguise.

A man who lies to himself and believes his own lies becomes unable to recognise truth. He ends up losing respect for himself and for others. When he has no respect for anyone, he can no longer love. He yields to his impulses, indulges in the lowest forms of pleasure, and behaves in the end like an animal. And it all comes from lying, to others and to yourself.

This is from The Brothers Karamazov, in Father Zosima's counsel against self-deception. Dostoevsky is not making a neat motivational point; he is showing how lying to oneself corrodes perception first, then respect, then the capacity to love.

Life is a tragedy when seen in close-up, but a comedy in long shot.

Chaplin's own summary of his comic method, repeated in interviews and quoted around the world at his death in 1977. It turns film grammar into life wisdom: in close-up, a fall is pain filling the whole frame; in long shot, the same fall becomes slapstick. Distance — in a camera or in time — changes tragedy's genre.

A day without laughter is a day wasted.

Popularly credited to Chaplin, but the thought is over two centuries old. The French writer Nicolas Chamfort noted in the 1790s: 'La plus perdue de toutes les journées est celle où l'on n'a pas ri' — the most wasted of all days is the one without laughter. The modern attribution to Chaplin spread partly through the 1992 film Shining Through. It suits him anyway: no one made laughter look more essential.

You'll never find rainbows if you're looking down.

A line from 'Swing High Little Girl', the song Chaplin composed — and sang himself, at nearly eighty — for the 1969 re-release of his 1928 silent film The Circus. The song plays over the opening image of a trapeze girl. The advice is physical before it is moral: to find a rainbow, the eyes must first come up off the ground.

Life is a beautiful, magnificent thing, even to a jellyfish.

Spoken by Calvero, the ageing music-hall clown Chaplin plays in Limelight (1952), as he coaxes a despairing young dancer back towards life. The jellyfish makes the thought playful, but the scene is deadly serious: Calvero is arguing against suicide. Life's magnificence, he insists, does not depend on rank, success or even understanding — it is there for every living thing.

What do you want a meaning for? Life is a desire, not a meaning.

Calvero's answer in Limelight (1952) when the young dancer Terry says life is aimless and without meaning. 'What do you want a meaning for? Life is a desire, not a meaning. Desire is the theme of all life!' Chaplin is not being cynical: he is pushing against the demand that existence justify itself as a thesis. The rose, Calvero adds, desires only to be a rose.

It is not a lack of love, but a lack of friendship, that makes unhappy marriages.

From Human, All Too Human (1878), Nietzsche's great book of aphorisms. He cuts against the romantic explanation of failed marriages: passion may begin a bond, but friendship — the ability to keep talking, to remain interesting to each other — is what lets two people keep meeting after the first intensity changes shape. Elsewhere in the book he advises: before marrying, ask whether you will still enjoy conversing with this person in old age.

Genuine Nietzsche, and remarkably early: he wrote it at twenty in a letter to his sister Elisabeth (11 June 1865), explaining why he was abandoning theology — 'if you wish to strive for peace of soul and happiness, then believe; if you wish to be a disciple of truth, then inquire.' The whole later philosophy is seeded here: comfort and truth ask different prices, and a serious mind must know which bill it is paying.
