Editor’s note

The forward room

Drive is not a command to move faster. This edition gathers forms of momentum that can survive doubt: discipline, courage, repair, patience and the dignity of another attempt.

The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitudes of mind.

Endlessly quoted from William James, the “father of American psychology”, yet researchers have never found this exact wording in his published work — treat it as a popular summary rather than a verified quotation. It does fairly compress his practical psychology: James argued that habit, attention and chosen attitude genuinely reshape experience, and modern cognitive therapy largely agrees.

In a 2019 NIH metabolic-ward trial, 20 adults ate about 500 more calories a day on ultra-processed meals than on matched minimally processed meals.

This was not a vague survey. Twenty adults lived at the NIH Clinical Center for four weeks and tried both diets for two weeks each. The meals were matched for calories offered, sugar, fat, sodium, fibre and macronutrients, and participants could eat as much or as little as they wanted. On the ultra-processed diet they ate about 508 extra calories per day and gained weight.

Your skin makes vitamin D when exposed to sunlight, but many people are low, especially where winters, clothing or indoor work reduce exposure.

Vitamin D helps with bone health and other body functions, and sunlight can trigger its production in skin. But latitude, season, skin pigmentation, clothing, sunscreen, air pollution and indoor work all change exposure. This matters globally because there is no one-size-fits-all sun rule. The lesson is balance: light is useful, but context decides the dose.
